QEH&S Manager Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary Service at RYCO

RYCO Quality, Environment, Health & Safety (QEH&S) Manager celebrates 30-year service anniversary with RYCO Hydraulics.

George Trainor started back in December 1990, as a Production Quality Engineer. Back then, RYCO only had one location, (previous headquarters in Footscray, Australia) with less than 100 employees both in the office and factory.

Fast forward to 2020, RYCO has since evolved and expanded on a global scale with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities, a global network of distribution centres, OEM hose assembly centres and RYCO 24•7 Service Centers. Our global footprint has extended to USA, New Zealand, Malaysia, South Africa, Austria, China, and Australia with our global headquarters located in Melbourne. We have 850 employees worldwide,3 production facilities, 6,789 clients and 26 global offices.

George has played a pivotal role in ‘Connecting Partnerships’ with Australian Submarine Corporation (ASC) whereby negotiations began mid-1991. When the ASC required specialised hydraulic hose assemblies, they chose RYCO to design, test and produce to their high standards.

Only RYCO has the design, technology, and testing facilities within Australia to meet the extreme requirements of the ASC. The experience and expertise gained through these challenges’ flows into the other areas of defence work that RYCO conducts so that no matter what the requirement regarding a defence application RYCO is more than able to respond.

George has since progressed to a Quality Manager and now is RYCO’s QEH&S Manager. All RYCO Hose Assembly Type Approvals for marine applications are arranged by George. RYCO holds type approvals from various third parties for hoses used in RYCO matched hose assemblies including hose assemblies fitted with Stainless Steel couplings used on ocean liners, navy vessels, commercial catamarans and in submarine fleets.

“Have loved my time at RYCO and hope there are many more years to come”, said Mr Trainor.

George is the longest standing RYCO employee apart from CEO – Leigh Morrison.

We would like to extend a big congratulations to George on achieving this milestone.

The New Zealand V8 Ute Racing Championship, one of the longest standing championships in the motorsport community, has confirmed plans for its 2020-2021 season – it’s 16th edition. And RYCO 24•7 is excited to announce we are continuing our sponsorship for another year!

After an initial year as naming rights sponsor of the long standing category, RYCO 24•7 is back for another season that will see the category race at four events.

Securing the title sponsor again is great news for the category, particularly with their enthusiasm for the category.

“RYCO 24•7 is excited to sponsor New Zealand V8 Ute 2020/2021 championship season! We enjoy supporting New Zealanders and we can’t wait to continue our involvement with such an exciting motorsport category. Bring on Round 1”, said New Zealand Sales and Operations Manager Azim Aslam.

The category will once again be airing a highlights package on terrestrial television on Sundays after each race weekend on CRC Motorsport on TV3. It has been one of most popular racing categories on the show for years in terms of audience share and this year’s field should continue that trend with its classic Ford vs Holden battles on the agenda.

The on-going effects of the global COVID 19 pandemic have meant that it will be a modest start for the category at Pukekohe, with a likely field of 10-12 cars but more are likely to find their way out of sheds for the 2021 races.

Heading the entry will be two-time champion and current title holder Paul Manuell in his Digga Bits Holden. His most likely challengers are Peter Ward in his Ward Demolition Holden and former champion Matthew Spratt in the rapid Primogrow Ford Falcon FG.

2020-’21 RYCO 24•7 New Zealand V8 Utes Championship Series:
Round Circuit Date

RYCO Filters 101

RYCO Filters 101

Filters are complementary to RYCO’s product offering and we have a wide range of filters and filtration accessories including inline spin-on, heavy duty inline, tank top, suction strainers, diffusers, air breather, filler cap/strainer, push-on filler as well as level and temperature gauges.

What is filtration?

The process by which solid particles are separated from a fluid by passing the fluid through a permeable material that will not let the solid particles through.

Filtration is needed to remove contamination from a hydraulic system. Contamination increases wear on hydraulic components and can lead to increased breakdowns.

How do filters work?

Filters work by passing hydraulic fluid through filter media, trapping particles of contamination allowing clean oil to flow through to the outlet.

Where are filters used in hydraulic systems?

Filters are used in four common areas of hydraulic systems:

  • Inline Filter
  • Return Filter
  • Suction Filter
  • Tank Filler/Breather

What are the types of filters?

There are three main types of filters: spin-on filters, inline filters, tank top filters as well as suction strainers and diffusers.

  1. Spin-on Filters
  • RYCO RIF series are all spin-on filters.
  • Spin-on filters are quick and easy to change.
  • They are available with a range of filtration ratings.
  • RIF15 has water trap feature.

  1. Inline Filters
  • RHF and RCF are heavy duty filters for mobile and industrial applications.
  • Higher pressure than spin-on filter.
  • All aluminium cast construction.
  • One-piece casting for main body housing.
  • RCF can be used as either as either an inline filter, tank top or suction filter.
  1. Tank Top Filters
  • Designed to filter returning to hydraulic tank.
  • All aluminium cast construction.
  • One-piece casting for main body housing.
  • Bypass valve built into the filter element.
  • Flow of oil bypasses the filter element if the filter.
  • Becomes blocked with contaminant.
  • Permanent magnet bonded to bottom of top cover.
  • Plate to catch coarse ferrous particles.
  1. Suction Strainers & Diffusers
  • Used inside hydraulic tanks.
  • Suction strainer used to protect the pump from large particle contamination.

RYCO 24•7 New Fleet of Hino Trucks

RYCO 24•7 New Fleet of Hino Trucks

RYCO 24•7 now runs a brand-new fleet of Hino trucks as part of the emergency breakdown services throughout Central Queensland.

Our older fleet have been running, without issue since 2008, clocking up in some instances 500,000 kilometres on rocky mine sites every day of the year.

RYCO 24•7 Business Manager, Wesley Bulters says, “The trucks take constant punishment over rocks, craters and unsealed roads”.

“They get hammered on site. The Executive Team approved the decision to purchase ten 11-tonne rate Hino 500 Series FD1124s, a bigger truck in this instance knowing the durability of these vehicles is proven” comments Wesley.

Our latest ten trucks were purchased through Orix and Sci Fleet Hino. The Hino 500 Series FE1124 is nine metres in length, three metres high, with a purpose-built body that accommodates its core function – a mobile service operation.

The trucks not only provide hydraulic hose breakdown service but carry a range of stock including adapters, couplings, hose assemblies and workshop tools.

Another five Hino’s are currently being built with provision for two more to be delivered by the end of the next financial year.

Wayne Watt, Central Queensland Operations Manager comments on the Hino trucks stating, “we’ve had a really good performance out of them, and they handle the rough roads well.”

Wayne, who works at the RYCO 24•7 Emerald branch has been working with RYCO for the last 12 years and is excited about the investments RYCO 24•7 is making for the future.

“We’ve been able to invest in new equipment as part of our ongoing commitment to our customers and our people,” Wayne concludes.

For more details about the Hino trucks, check out Prime Mover Magazine’s ‘Ask the Dust’ feature.

Hydraulic Connectors 101

Hydraulic Connectors 101

As the name suggests, hydraulic connectors are used to connect hydraulic circuits by joining two different end terminations together and creating a flow passage to ensure fluid transfer.

Hydraulic connectors can be grouped into three main types:

  • Internal Thread
  • External Thread
  • No Thread

Internal and external threaded connectors are also known as female and male, respectively.

There are many thread standards in the industry primarily based on the country / region of origin. BSP (British Standard Pipe), NPT (National Pipe Tapered), UN (Unified Inch Screw Threads) and Metric to name some of the most common.

To avoid damage to hydraulic systems, selecting the right type of thread is very important.

Common variation in fitting designs are outlined below that is useful in thread identification.

Tapered / Parallel Threads

Some threads have a tapered thread surface, such as BSPT, NPT (denoted by letter T) whereas others are parallel. BSPP, UN are examples for parallel threads.

Tapered threads are designed to seal on the thread surface.

Sealing of Hydraulic Connectors

Along with tapered threads, other sealing methods include:

  • Metal Seal
  • Soft Seal

Metal seal type was developed to maximise sealing of a connector under pressure. Connectors that have this sealing method will include a machined cone seat (convex or concave) that will seal with the corresponding male / female connector.

Common seat angles include:

  • 30° cone seat (BSPP, some Metric fittings)
  • 45° cone seat (SAE fittings)
  • 37° cone seat (JIC fittings)
  • 24° cone seat (Metric fittings)

Some connectors are designed to seal using elastomeric seals, natural or synthetic to prevent leakage. This type of sealing method is common with adaptors intended for port use, where a soft seal on the base of the adaptor will seal with the flat surface of a port.

Soft seal connectors can be seen on the face of male fittings and adaptors (such as ORFS) which will establish a seal with a flat surface on a female fitting of the same size.

Thread Size, Thread Count & Pitch

Thread size is designated by the external major diameter of a thread that can easily be measured using a calliper. The actual measurement is generally slightly lesser than the nominal thread size. Imperial thread sizes are expressed in inches and metric thread sizes in millimetres paired with “M” (e.g. M6 for 6mm).

Thread count (also known as Threads Per Inch – TPI) and pitch are also important factors when identifying threads and are usually stated along with the thread size.

TPI is common with imperial connectors which basically is the number of threads within an inch measured lengthwise.

For metric threads, pitch is used instead which means the distance between two crests of a thread in millimetres.

How to Identify Connectors?
RYCO’s Thread ID Mate application provides an intuitive and simple identification process to help you find detailed information about threads specifications, sizes and more.

Hydraulic threads can be identified using a few simple steps using the Thread ID Kit and RYCO Thread ID Mate application.

  1. Determine the thread type:
Visually inspect to determine if the connector has and internal or an external thread (if any).
  2. Is the thread tapered or parallel?:
Tapered threads can be identified by visual inspection or placing a straight surface, such as a ruler, next to the thread to compare the difference in diameter at the shoulder of the fitting to the diameter at the tip.
  3. What type of sealing face / method does the connector have?:
Check if the connector has a conical sealing face or a flat sealing face, and whether a soft seal is present.
  4. Using Vernier Calipers included within the RYCO Thread ID Kit, measure the outer / inner diameter of the thread:
Measure the ID / OD of the connector across flats of the Vernier Calipers for better accuracy.
  5. Determine the sealing face seat angle (if any):
Align the seat gauge of the Thread ID Kit with the seat of the connector and identify the angle that matches with the seat.
  6. Find the pitch / TPI:
Use the thread pitch gauge to find out the exact pitch / TPI and verify the thread.

RYCO Thread ID Mate offers you a guided, user friendly process to identify connectors quickly and efficiently.

The Thread ID Mate application is available for your Android and iOS devices. That’s thread identification you can keep in your pocket.
